Turn a captive ring
Sorry guys, I dont have a video to post this week. Ive kind of fallen behind a bit with summertime activities. Sunday I am going to the fair and will report back on my miniature chair. Over on Facebook, Ive been describing a guitar pick holder that will attach to a necklace. If I can figure out how to do it, Ill make it tomorrow.

A Custom Walnut Vanity
I put a few pictures of this project up in a what we are working on post last week. Its finished now and while it was pretty straight forward, there were a couple of interesting wrinkles ... Our client liked the onyx top and the way that the sink was carved out of the solid block .. The metal base that came with it though didnt go with her decor though so we got to make a new one, and a matching mirror. The vanity had to have an interrupted back rail to accommodate the holes that were already drilled for the faucets. Sam rolled us a couple of pieces of steel and he also made a couple of curved brass pieces to line the opening of the mirror frame ... Click the photos to enlarge them ...

The onyx top and the base that came with it ... I havent seen it in person, but the onyx started out as a block 6" + thick and they milled the sink from the solid ... Very cool, but hmmm ... seems like there would be a lot of waste ...
Ahhh, the mirror ... Everyone likes the mirror. The light sconces are antique brass and Joan asked if we could add some brass details to the mirror frame .. We tapered the frame like the legs and added some curves and small round headed brass pins to hold the brass in place.

the concept was loosely based (with a few modifications) on a table we made in the early 90s. the clients nixed the lower crossbar and the verticals in the model below, and sam came up with the idea of suspending the curved stretcher between the verticals with the metal pins. it called for some fussy and careful measuring and drilling, but the concept turned out to be really valid .. we all like the new design and the blackened, tight fitting steel pins give the structure total rigidity with a relatively light and graceful somewhat asian feel. click the photos to enlarge them ...

the top is 42" wide and 1.75" thick, made from some of irion lumbers finest 8/4 cherry.

and here with a temporary spacer in the middle for fitting up the curved stretcher ... the real connecting piece was mason mitered into the stiffeners at the tops of the vertical elements.
we decided to skip the middle stiffener and little outriggers at the ends. the middle stiffeners seemed extra and the outriggers seemed to serve no purpose ... final photos next week sometime ... happy holidays ...
